Today’s blog is part of the “Use your Words” Challenge! My words are: shadow ~ scary ~ scream ~ flowers ~ memories. They were assigned to my by Spatulas On Parade!
“Memories are like ice cream. They bring you undeniable joy but can also cause a brain freeze!”
That is a phrase my friend’s father always used to say to the kids in the neighborhood. I must have heard him say that to me a thousand times in my lifetime.
To this day, I don’t think I truly understand what the phrase means. The best interpretation I can make out of it is that memories can be comforting and painful at the same time.
It is especially painful for me to talk about it now, because, my friend’s father now suffers from Alzheimers.
The man was a very sweet, adventurous, brilliant, writer and lively human being. Today, he has been reduced to a mere shadow of his former self!
In his vibrant days, the man’s house and garden were surrounded by exotic flowers from around the world. Roses were his favorite to grow! He always said that there were a never-ending species of roses to cultivate and he would never get bored!
His curiosity and love for roses was legendary!
Every year, he would grow a special rose variety in his garden. They would produce a gorgeous bloom around late spring and quickly became the envy of everyone in the neighborhood.
In early summer, he would pluck 17 of his latest rose species from his garden. He would arrange them into a beautiful bouquet and present them to his wife on the eve of their wedding anniversary. He chose the number 17 because it is the date of their wedding.
The scary Alzheimer disease has made it impossible for him to continue that tradition in the past few years. Now, his son has taken up the tradition by growing roses in his own garden. The son has now decided to present the bloomed roses to his own wife every year on the eve of their own wedding anniversary.
For me, his gardenia flowers are what I will always remember.
Whenever our family visited his family, I would get a wonderful whiff of gardenias right at the entrance of his home. I remember spending hours on his front steps, inhaling the scent of these Gardenia flowers.
He would always say that they were his favorite flowers in the scent department. He wanted to make sure everyone would get to experience their fragrance right before they entered his home.
“No one can be sad or angry after they smell a bouquet of Gardenia”, he always said.
This wonderful fragrance is so deeply embedded in my memory that I can pick out the fragrance of one gardenia nestled in a fish market!!
Candles are my favorite decor item. Recently, I have discovered a true Illume’s Gardenia scented candles. Their Gardenia scent comes closest to a true gardenia flower.
If I could, I would scream praises of Gardenias from the rooftop!
On a daily basis!
Life is filled with memories, and in my case, the memories that are associated with my sense of smell are the best memories!
One of my favorite scents is the scent of fresh cut grass while enjoying a summer picnic in the park.
Growing up, cucumber sandwiches were always a staple in all picnic baskets. The cucumber sandwiches were always on the spicy side, yet, very delicious.
These days, I am cutting down on my spicy food after an ulcer scare! Cucumber Sandwiches are exactly what I need.
It has forced me to take my favorite sandwiches and find ways to make them delicious and exciting without the spice level being 100%.
Asian Style Cucumber Sandwich is like nothing you have ever tasted! It is definitely not your grandmother’s cucumber sandwich. The flavors are a blend of sweet, sour and salty goodness.
This days, I make the Asian style of cucumber sandwich for all my picnics. It has a wider range of taste and also makes for a very colorful presentation.
One of the stars of this sandwich is the Srirarcha Sauce. It adds a tiny bit of spice level to the sauce and helps add additional layer of Asian flavor to this cucumber sandwich.
Before you scream at your monitor about how srirarcha sauce is not good for ulcers, I want to let you know that I used a very itsy bitsy amount of it in this recipe. It is too little to even make a bleep on the Scoville scale! However, I thank you for being concerned about my health.

So, what is your favorite flower scent?
Recipe Details (Makes 4 servings of Asian Style Cucumber Sandwich)
Total time to prepare –
For the dressing – Minimum of 2 hours of marinating time
For Marinating the Vegetables – 30 minutes
To assemble the sandwich – 10 minutes
1 Red Pepper
1 Red onion
1 Cup of Shredded Carrots
½ cup of unsalted pistachios removed from their shell
4 Ounces of Cream Cheese
4 Wheat rolls
2 tsp of Soy Sauce
1 tsp of Sriracha Sauce
½ tsp of lemon juice
1 tsp of salt
3 tsp of sugar
1 tsp of freshly ground pepper
- In a mixing bowl, add the soy sauce, Sriracha sauce, sugar, lemon juice, salt and pepper.
- Heat the mixed ingredients in the microwave for no more than 10 seconds.
- Stir the dressing well and allow to marinate for 2 hours or overnight in the fridge
- Cut the Red Onions and Red Bell Pepper into julienne style cuts
- Peel the cucumber skin and cut into thin round pieces
- Roughly crush the pistachios
- In a mixing bowl, mix the vegetables
- Add the soy sauce dressing to the vegetables and toss lightly but make sure all the vegetables are well coated
- Set aside the mixture for about 30 minutes
- Cut the wheat roll into half
- Spread the cream cheese on the inside of each roll
- Start by layering one of the rolls with the cucumber
- Top with the remaining vegetables
- Add the pistachios on the top of the sandwich
- Close the top bun and cut into half
- Follow the same assembly steps for the rest of the wheat rolls
Serve the cucumber sandwich immediately
